Planning Issues

With the advent of Melbourne 2030, suburbs in the West of Melbourne are finding themselves at odds with developer-friendly local government, developer-friendly VCAT, and an uphill battle to maintain the amenity and lifetsyle they once enjoyed. Our infrastructure starved suburbs risk serious social problems through inappropriate development that impacts on our limited open space and which potentialy leads to social isolation and the challenges this brings. Resident groups and action groups such as Save Our Suburbs, are leading the fight to counter inappropriate development, and demand open and transparent consultation.

Kealba Residents Get Busy

More than 80 residents in Sunshine and Kealba have formed a group to take on the operators of a concrete plant at the former Sunshine Quarry which sits just west of the Western Ring Rd.

The group has taken aim at the operators who allow trucks to operate late at night and for dust and dirt to blanket the surrounding residential area. Read Brimbank Leader coverage of the story.

Sunshine goes to the Minister over proposed Foundry Rd Development

In March 2007 SunRRA asked the Minister to call in the “three towers” development planned for Market Place Shopping Centre in Sunshine. This did not happen and the residents objected to VCAT where the developer won when under the Planning & Environment Act 1987 clause 82.2 and 82.3 we were disallowed to object and the permit was granted as it was exempt from third party objectors . Read the presentation here.

Interestingly, the development has not got off the ground despite a planning permit being granted.
